Description

The University of Oviedo, founded in 1608 in the Principality of Asturias, in Northern Spain, focuses its main functions in teaching, study and research, so as to pursue the objectives stated in its statutes.

A total of 38 Departments encompass a wide range of fields of specialisation, structured in the areas of Arts & Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social & Legal Sciences and Engineering & Architecture, hosting 196 research groups. The Vice-Rectorate for Research fosters excellence in research, development and innovation by means of dedicated staff members, promoting the participation in EU projects and supporting researchers for that aim. Likewise, the Research Service is devoted to the management, processing, administration and justification of research projects and contracts.

The University of Oviedo currently counts on 20.590 students, with 2.000 research and teaching staff and 1.000 staff devoted to administrative, management and supporting activities. The institution is distributed in 3 Campuses, located in the cities of Oviedo, Gijón and Mieres, hosting 17 Faculties and Schools where 66 Undergraduate Degree programmes, 75 Master`s Degree programmes, 6 Erasmus Mundus Master`s programmes and 30 PhD Programmes are taught. The institution has signed mobility agreements with more than a thousand universities and research centres around the world.

In September 2021, the European Commission awarded Universidad de Oviedo with the European “HR Excellence in Research” seal, which recognises the commitment of European institutions and universities to generate and support a stimulating and favourable research environment.

Since January 2023, the University of Oviedo is coordinating INGENIUM, an alliance of 10 institutions of higher education from 10 European countries. As an Erasmus+ “European Universities” initiative, the project seek to enable each member of the network to offer high-quality study and qualification programmes with digital components which are shared within the INGENIUM Alliance. Due to the internationalisation of courses and an increase in student and staff mobility, the promotion of intercultural competence among teachers and students is of central interest.
