Description
The Medical University of Gdańsk (GUMed) is a leading academic and research institution recognized nationally and internationally for its excellence in medical education and scientific research. It ranks among the top 10 Polish universities under the prestigious `Excellence Initiative – Research University` competition and is featured in major global university rankings, including ARWU, QS, THE, and U.S. News. In 2024, MUG placed 12th in the Perspektywy Academic Ranking, making it one of Poland top medical universities.
GUMed is renowned for its cutting-edge research, with its scientists frequently cited in leading journals. Many of its research projects receive international funding and involve collaborations with foreign institutions. The university innovative potential in medicine, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences is supported by modern facilities such as the Medical Simulation Centre and Invasive and Non-Invasive Medicine Centres. By 2025, new expansions will include a University Dental Centre and a Paediatric Medicine Centre, both equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
GUMed’s clinical entities, including the University Clinical Centre and University Centre of Maritime and Tropical Medicine, are recognised for pioneering treatments in fields like oncology, cardiology, and multi-organ transplants. The university is also a leading beneficiary of Medical Research Agency (MRA) funding, securing over PLN 224 million for R&D, with 17 ongoing projects.
In 2020, GUMed, alongside Gdańsk University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk, formed the Fahrenheit Union of Universities to strengthen Gdańsk’s academic reputation. Additionally, GUMed joined the ACE2-EU consortium in 2024, aiming to foster European cooperation in education and research.
GUMed educates over 6600 students, including 900 international students, and continues to expand its global presence through student and staff exchanges, long-standing partnerships like the one with Nagoya University in Japan, and the introduction of new English-language programs such as the International Master in Sustainable Drug Discovery. The university remains committed to internationalisation and the continuous development of its academic community.
